Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gardenfield

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Gardenfield, County Limerick, is a twenty-metre earthen ring on a low rise, its scarped edge and hidden fosse still drawing field boundaries and farm tracks across the pasture. The clear interior invites imagination about the people who shaped it, while the name warns that the land may keep more than it reveals.
In pasture, on NE-facing slope of a low rise. Circular area (20m N-S; 20.65m E-W) defined by a scarped edge (H 0.85m; Wth 1.25m) with an external fosse (D 0.55m; Wth 2.05m); fosse is covered by dense overgrowth. Field boundary runs along outer line of fosse W->NNW and along centre line of fosse N->NE. A farm trackway runs across site in a N-S direction from N to SSW. Interior level, dry and clear of overgrowth. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
