Abbey Grey Fort

Abbey Grey Fort is a large oval enclosure in Monasternalea, County Galway, holding the remains of an early church and graveyard beside a bullaun cupped for ritual or grinding. Surrounded on three sides by bogland, the site may have been called Mainisteair na Liatha, the monastery of the grey place, though Knox doubted that name and proposed Kilmorenetogher instead. Later field boundaries cut across the old bank, marking how agriculture reclaimed a place first shaped for prayer.
