What is recorded here

Fulacht Fiadh is a hunting-cooking site in County Cork, Ireland, where a roughly circular mound of burnt material still rises fourteen metres across and 1.4 metres high beside a stream. The mound has been untouched since a stone trough was found there many years ago, preserving the heat-marked remains of food prepared for hunters rather than households. A holy well lies thirty metres to the south-west, suggesting the place served both practical hunger and ceremonial thirst.
In pasture, on W side of stream. Heavily overgrown, roughly circular mound of burnt material (diam. 14m; H 1.4m). Bowman (1934, 557) noted that 'a stone trough, about 4 feet by 11/2 by 1ft. deep was found here many years ago. The mound, however, appears to have been untouched'. Holy well (14002) c. 30m to SSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
