Hot water cooking, yes, but also a border marker, a gathering place, a small temple of steam. The shape is not accidental. The opening faces out, as if inviting someone across a field rather than hiding inside a hole. People came there because heat, water and story could be shared.

In rough grazing, some of which is reclaimed. A horseshoe-shaped mound (11.5m NE-SW; 10m NW-SE; H 0.7m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil, partially covered by gorse and briars. The opening (Wth 2.8m) faces NW. A standing stone (CO118-047----) lies c. 170m to the SW. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
