Hot water hissed across sharp stones while people waited for food or cloth to clean. The pipeline cut through Shinagh in 2000, exposing a broken oval of charcoal soil beside the stream. Its wooden trough is gone, perhaps taken by later fields, but the stone mouth still points north as if calling water back from forgetfulness.

Discovered on the S side of a stream during topsoil removal along the route of the Ballincollig-Ballineen gas pipeline and excavated in 2000. It was completely contained within the pipeline corridor. A truncated irregular spread (4.8m E-W; 2.75m N-S; D 0.23m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil with a well-defined opening (Wth 1.2m) facing N towards the stream. Though excavation did not reveal any evidence of a trough, the excavator suggests that the trough may have been destroyed during previous agricultural land reclamation works (Tobin 2001).
