Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Carheennascovoge

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are often called cashels, yet that is a mistaken identity. A cashel is a defensive ringfort built by people, while a fairy fort is an abandoned dwelling or ritual marker handed to the unseen. The distinction matters because it changes what the stones witnessed.
In pastureland. Subcircular cashel (41.5m E-W; 33.8m N-S), in fair condition, defined by a drystone wall. A field wall has been built against it but does not entirely obscure it as original external wall-facing is visible in places. (Redington 1916a, 56; McCaffrey 1952, 153-4, no. 27) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 19 January 2017
