O'Donovan never found the Reary More fort, but local people claimed a rath stood on the hilltop before memory faded. That absence makes the place more alive: a whole dwelling, fence, hearth and perhaps a burial mound may still lie hidden beneath grass, stone or forgotten field work. The name Reary More preserves the shape of what disappeared, while the missing fort keeps returning through story because people once believed they knew where it stood.

Described by O'Donovan as 'the old natives of the Parish say that there was formerly a rath on the top of the hill at Rearymore, but I have not examined it' (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, p. 70).
