Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rosnagowloge OR Tirinchinan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Rosnagowloge and Tirinchinan both carry the same red-clay circle, proving human hands built what fairy legend now occupies. The fort stands sixty-five metres across on an Offaly hill, large enough for dozens of people and proud enough to resist forgetting. Its southern edge has vanished, perhaps rased by ploughs or perhaps swallowed by the story itself. What remains is a broken ring in pasture, still complete in the minds of those who believe fairies inherit every place humans abandon.
In pasture, on top of a hill in undulating countryside. Raised platform (diam 65m N-S; ext. H 3.5m avg.) defined by a scarp with enclosing fosse (Wth 3m) and external bank (Wth 2m; ext. H 2m avg.) both of which are destroyed from SSE through S to SSW. No entrance feature visible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
