Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Rath (glanarought By.), County Kerry: a 32m earthen ring north of the Baurearagh River, with two banks, a fosse, an eastern causeway entrance, and an underground passage opening in the southern scarp. It is the kind of place people called fairy because it refused to explain itself like an ordinary farmyard or house. Someone cut, carried, and shaped that ring in level pasture; what they kept inside, or hid from sight, has not survived the telling.
In level pasture, to the N of the Baurearagh River. A raised circular area (32m E-W; 31.5m N-S) defined by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 5.5m) is low and evident NNW-SE and S-SW. Elsewhere, the interior is defined by a scarp (H 5.5m). The fosse (Wth 2.4m; D 0.3m) is evident all round. The outer bank (Wth 5.1m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.4m) is evident ESE-SW. There is a causeway entrance (Wth 3m) at E. The interior slopes down gently to the E and W from a low N-S ridge which extends through the centre. There are depressions and a collapsed area on this ridge. The opening to a Man-made underground passage (KE102-043001-) is evident in the scarp at S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
