Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisnawully

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are earthen ringforts, and Lisnawully holds one on a rise in County Louth. Its circular shadow, thirty metres across, appeared in a drone photograph taken by Tom Conachy in July 2018, with a larger pit breaking the north-west edge. People may have lived there before the field took it back, but the land keeps the shape while withholding the story.
Located on a rise in an undulating landscape. The cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) defined by a continuous fosse feature was recorded by a drone-mounted camera by Tom Conachy in July 2018. A large pit (diam. c. 5m) is on the fosse at NW. Date of upload: 16 July 2018
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Lisnawully is a likely early-medieval circular enclosure, indicated by a fosse feature and a large pit, suggesting domestic or defensive use. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy folklore, reflecting their mystical status in Irish cultural memory.
