Man-made underground passage in Demesne — Report the wrong picture

Demesne holds a small stone chamber and a blocked northeast passage, perhaps a hidden room for storage or ritual before collapse cut it off. People may have gone down into the dark with oil lamps, trusting the walls to carry them while the world above rained or raged. The sudden closure turned the passage into a quiet witness, preserving the shape of human breath and intention beneath the soil.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Souterrain consisting of a sub-rectangular chamber (L 1.5m, Wth 1.2m, H 1.3m). A passage leads off to the NE, but is blocked after 2m by collapse (CLAJ 1933, 95). Now closed.
