Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisnaclea (kingscourt Ed)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Double banks and a deep central ditch enclose a circular space twenty-six metres across in Lisnaclea. The entrance has vanished beneath soil and vegetation, leaving the fort sealed like a forgotten room. It may have been a homestead, a refuge or a boundary marker for whoever lived there before the name changed. The earth still holds the shape of that choice, waiting for someone to walk its hidden door.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 26m) enclosed by two substantial earthen banks with wide, deep, intermediate fosse. Original entrance not recognisable. Internal area very overgrown with vegetation. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
