Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lavagh (leitrim By.) stands on a slight rise in a low-lying place, its grass-covered bank still marking a circular boundary despite field edges and a water hole pressing against it. The measured widths and entrance gaps suggest people shaped this ground for defence or dwelling, while local names preserve the older belief that fairies also claimed it. Neither explanation removes the other; the earth remembers both kinds of life.
Situated on a slight rise in a fairly low-lying position. This is a grass and scrub-covered circular area (diam. 43.6m E-W; 41.7m N-S; int. diam. 39.5m E-W; 37m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 3.5-4.55m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.9-1.3m), with traces of an outer fosse (Wth of top 3.7m; Wth of base 1.4m; ext. D 0.15m) N-E. The perimeter is incorporated into field banks E-S-NW, and a water hole has been created outside the bank at SW. There are entrance gaps at NNW and S, but the original entrance is not identified. The raths (LE032-018----; LE032-019----; LE032-020----) form an E-W line c. 120m to the N.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
