Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lackenduff

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Lackenduff holds a vanished ringfort, forty metres across, levelled in 1982 yet still shaping the field boundary that curves west to respect it. The earth forgot the wall but the fence remembers the circle, bending around an absence people could no longer see. Perhaps that is why fairy forts sound like jokes until dusk, when the boundary leads the eye toward what is missing.
In pasture, on gentle N-facing slope. Circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) levelled c. 1982. Field boundary curves to W to respect site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
