Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockaun (longford By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockaun holds a fifty-five metre circular rath where ploughs and time erased most of the bank, leaving only a degraded scarp and partial fosse. The missing earth does not vanish; it redistributes into the surrounding grassland, carrying the fort’s shape one inch further each year. What remains is a boundary marker more than a building, a reminder that occupancy leaves evidence even when ownership changes.
In level grassland. Poorly preserved circular rath (diam. 55m) defined by a bank and external fosse from SW through W to N. From N through E to SW the bank has been levelled and all that survives is degraded scarp. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 10 January 2018
