Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Higginstown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mnoogo is a fairy fort, an earthen ringfort on a steep southeast-facing slope in Higginstown, County Longford. It appeared as a circular enclosure labelled Fort on the 1837 Ordnance Survey map, but became a pit by 1914 because people quarried it away. The stones and soil may have built roads, walls or homes, turning an old stronghold into ordinary material for daily life.
On a steep SE-facing slope. Depicted as a circular enclosure with the designation 'Fort' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as a pit on the 1914 ed. The monument has been quarried away. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 21 February 2012
