Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Farnane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not forts at all but abandoned ringforts misnamed because people stopped understanding them. In Farnane a broken earthen circle still holds its shape at the foot of a gentle slope, wide enough for a small household and open at one side as if waiting to be reoccupied. The fairies enter the story only after the humans leave, filling the vacancy with their own name.
Situated at the base of a gentle SW-facing slope in gently rolling pasture with good views in all directions apart from in the W where the land rises sharply. The monument is partially obscured by scrub vegetation. It is evident as a roughly circular area (27m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; Wth 2.15m; ext. H 0.4m). There is a gap in the bank in the SW (Wth 3m). Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 18 June 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
