Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Drumcolumb

In low-lying rough pasture, at the base of a ridge. A circular area (diam. c. 22m) covered in rushes, defined by a low rise (Wth 6m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.8m) W-E. A silted up external fosse (Wth 4m) is evident as a band of rushes W-NE. The bank is clearly visible in an aerial photograph (GSIAP, G 290-89) as an arc of light-coloured vegetation NE-SSW while the external fosse is evident as a band of dark-coloured vegetation WSW-E. There is another rath (SL027-142001-) in the same field c. 50m to N. A fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Drumcolumb is a circular early-medieval defensive or domestic site, likely dating to between the 5th and 10th centuries AD. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy lore, and they were often considered places of supernatural significance in Irish folklore.
