Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cullenagh (glenquin By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fantasy. They are old human places misnamed because people stopped understanding them. This is one of those places: a round earthwork in a field, with entrances, boundaries and a maintained interior. The fairy label is not mockery. It is memory losing its shape. What is clear is that humans made it, used it and forgot it. That is what makes it extraordinary.
In level lawn, to rear of house. Circular area (37.5m N-S; 38.4m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.65m; ext. H 0.75m) covered by trees and bushes. Break in bank at NNW (Wth.2m) and SE (Wth 3.4m). Field boundaries abut bank at SW, NE and E; enclosure bounded by pasture fields NE->SW. Drain cut along external base of bank E->SW. Interior level and maintained as lawn. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
