Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cortober (clankee By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Cortober holds a faded ring where human hands shaped earth into a circle wide enough for thirty-four paces. Its southern gap still points toward the life that entered and left it. The fairies may have taken the sharp edge of the story, but they did not erase the shape.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 34m) enclosed by a low, much-denuded earthen bank. Break in bank at S may represent original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
