Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cornakill (clankee By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and others lived beside the fort, not inside it. The distinction matters. A ringfort is not a generic mound. It is a boundary drawn in earth around one household, one yard, one life. Whether the fort was built before the village or the village gathered around the fort cannot be judged from the mound alone.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 33m) enclosed by a low, partly denuded earthen bank. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
