Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cooleeny

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortals may have built the ring, but the fairies finished it. They took the entrance, deleted the ditch and widened the chamber until human tools could no longer measure it. The farm boundary now cuts through one wall because the fairies refused to share a complete circle with living owners. What remains is their rejection of the survey, a round room large enough for music but small enough to hide from arithmetic.
On a hillock in otherwise low-lying pasture. A slightly raised circular area (diam. 40.2m) enclosed by a bank of earth and stone, which has been modified and incorporated into a field boundary from SSE-S-NNW. Elsewhere it has been levelled. There is no trace of a fosse. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
