Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynash (clare)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No fairy, no magic. A round fortress, built and forgotten. The truth is simpler and sharper. People made a boundary, lived inside it, stopped coming back. The earth kept the shape because no one asked it to explain itself.
In pasture, on N-facing slope. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m), on 1923 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. However, arc of two concentric earthen banks is evident N->SE: inner bank (int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.1m); outer bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.1m); distance apart top-of-bank to top-of-bank is 5m. Enclosing element truncated by field boundaries SE->N. Interior slopes down gently to W and is under marshy pasture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
