Fairy forts are human raths misnamed because people stopped remembering they were built. In Ballynaraha a circular earthwork about forty metres across stood clear enough for Hartnett to measure in 1939, but pasture and plough have since reduced it to a faint rise. The fairness in the name is not a claim about sprites; it is a confession that the human hand has become hard to see.

In pasture. Depicted as hachured, roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; slight rise visible in area of site. According to Hartnett (1939, 213) fort was 'clearly traceable....approximately 50 yards in diameter'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
