What is recorded here

A broken earthen ring in Ballymakellett still marks the edge of a forgotten life. Its bank stands highest on the north and east, while gaps on the south and west suggest that time, rain or hunger took the rest. If a hidden passage exists beneath it, the fort becomes more than a boundary; it becomes a doorway into the dark country under Louth.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Circular area (int. diam. 24m) enclosed by earthen bank (Wth 4m, H 1m internally, 1.4m externally), best preserved on N and E, badly degraded elsewhere with several gaps. Possible Man-made underground passage (LH004-092002-) at site.
