Man-made underground passage in Ballymakellett

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Isolated Man-made underground passage, discovered during house construction in 1984. Located on a spur of land forming a terrace on the S slopes of the Cooley Mountains. The modern entrance, owing to a displaced lintel, is in the middle of the Man-made underground passage. The present extent of the souterain is a drystone-built passage (L 10.1m, Wth 0.7m, H 0.9m) curving gently from NNE-SSW. The passage is blocked at both ends by collapse and may have originally extended further.
