Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballygoghlan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human places misnamed because people stopped remembering their own history. In Ballygoghlan a ringfort still lies hidden under pasture, its shallow ditch and buried bank waiting to be read. The fairies belong later, invented to explain what humans forgot.
In undulating pasture. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on 1841 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. However, a faint trace of its outline is discernable as a circular area (29m N-S; 31.6m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 0.2m; Wth 1m) with external fosse (Wth c. 3m) and external bank (Wth c. 4m; H c. 0.2m). Line of fosse is emphasised by darker grass growing in it. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
