Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human rings, built and forgotten. In Ballyboght the ring is almost gone, reduced to a pale band of soil in a ploughed field above a steep slope. Whatever life moved inside it has vanished, but the shape remains: a circular room without walls, facing the valley like a chair left behind.

Depicted as hachured subcircular enclosure on 1842 OS 6-inch map; as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on 1904 and 1938 OS 6-inch maps. Levelled; circular area (diam. 24m) defined by band of light coloured soil (Wth 2m). Interior slopes down gently to N. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 567) as single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 23yd; bank c. 3ft H) on M. Ryan's land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
