Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinroe East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are no such thing. They are abandoned human settlements, stripped of identity and renamed to suit fear. In Ballinroe East, a broken earthen bank and shallow ditch mark a place where people lived, worked and died before memory failed. The fairies are not the point. The forgotten humans are.
In pasture on E-facing slope. Slightly raised circular area (44m N-S; 46.3m E-W) enclosed by almost levelled bank (H 0.65m); external fosse (D 0.8m) NW->SE. Break in bank to E. Interior level; NW quadrant raised slightly. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
