Saint Brigid's Well Brewery

Gateway, dated 1862, comprising elliptical-headed opening with tooled rock-faced cut-sandstone block-and-start surround having keystone/date stone, rock-faced cut-limestone piers, cut-stone coping having carved lion finial, and sections of coursed rock-faced cut-limestone flanking lower walls incorporating square-headed pedestrian opening to west with cut-stone lintel, and shallow segmental-headed pedestrian opening to east with red brick ‘voussoirs’ (now blocked-up with exposed concrete block). Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Saint Brigid’s Well Brewery.

A finely-proportioned gateway incorporating high quality stone work, which forms a picturesque feature in the streetscape. The fine detailing, ranging from the tooled rock-faced dressings, the inscribed keystone/date stone, and the lion finial, enhances the architectural design quality of the composition. The gateway is of additional significance for its associations with the Saint Brigid's Well Brewery (later Power's Distillery) operating on site since the early nineteenth century.
