Tobertoby is an ordinary well at Duffsfarm in County Louth, recorded on the 1912 Ordnance Survey map with a name that sounds like a sacred Christian site. The first part means well or spring, while Toby suggests a personal name, creating an illusion of hidden holiness. The 1967 field report rejected that illusion, leaving behind a small philosophical joke: a place can wear the clothing of myth yet contain no myth at all.
