Castleknock Castle rose as a Norman stone fortress in the late 12th century when Hugh Tyrrel claimed the land to control the route into Dublin. Edward Bruce captured the stronghold in 1317 before abandoning it for lack of supplies, while later traditions whisper that a kidnapped girl died in its turret and still walks the ruins at midnight. The castle fell into ruin after 1647, but its shadow remains beneath the college that occupies the ancient mound today.
