Cairn

Cairn, unclassified

What is recorded here

Cairn is a large low stone mound, about five metres across and sixty centimetres high, on a flat terrace in County Carlow. It belongs to a large group of similar cairns, suggesting the terrace once marked many lives or events rather than a single famous deed. People may have gathered there to remember, worship or orient themselves across the land. The stones still lie where they were set, waiting for that lost purpose to be imagined again.
On a relatively flat terrace, a large low cairn (diam. c. 5m; H 0.6m). Recorded by Ó Murchú (2011, 73) as part of a Master's thesis (Survey number: C18). One of a large group of cairns (see CW026-019----). Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 04 November 2013
A Neolithic cairn; part of a widespread funerary tradition in early Irish prehistory. Its association with a larger group of cairns suggests a regional ceremonial or burial landscape.
