What is recorded here
Derreeny holds a square sandstone boulder tall enough to block the sky, its upper surface marked with forgotten lines. South of the rock, a shallow hemispherical hollow touches the stone as if a hut once leaned against it. Sheep still graze the rough upland above the peat, unaware that they walk across a place where someone may have sheltered, marked the boulder and left the shape behind.
In upland area of rough sheep-grazing. Panel of rock art (KE082-109----) with possible hut site identified and described by Aoibheann Lambe as; 'A prominent large sandstone glacial erratic which is roughly square-shaped in plan and up to 1.75m high at S and W and approx. 1m high at N, upper surface at E is overlain by peat and vegetation is inscribed with rock art on its upper surface. Directly S of the boulder, there is a hemispherical-shaped area (dims. c. 6m E-W by 3m N-) whose straight side at N is partially formed by the S face of the boulder' (A. Lambe 12/03/2023).
