Indicated

Crannog

What is recorded here

Indicated is a small roughly circular crannog in Cuilcagh Lough, about sixty-five metres from the shore. It is the kind of place people may have built to live above water, keep animals safe or simply watch the lough change with the weather. The lake may have swallowed an older path or homestead, leaving only this round shadow behind.
Small roughly circular island (diam. c. 20m) in Cuilcagh Lough, c. 65m from the shoreline. Not marked on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
