Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Clearing Cúil An Bhuacaigh in 1990 broke the visible fort into a smaller ring, yet the hidden ground and local memory kept its shape alive.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. 'Stone fort with 2 (?) ramparts' (int. diam. 110ft; ext. diam. 275ft) 'almost completely cleared away during May 1952' (UCC). In May 1986 circular area (42.6m N-S; 42.8m E-W) defined by low earthen bank visible to NE and SE; bank covered by field clearance material, of earth and stone, elsewhere. Surviving bank levelled in August/September 1990. Material from bank and surrounding surface dumped into interior to form new bank enclosing smaller area (22m N-S; 19m E-W). According to local information, originally "three rings". Possible Man-made underground passage (CO070-008002-) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 5/1990).
