Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a hidden fairy fort above the River Roughty valley, recorded on an 1895 map but no longer visible in the pasture. Its underground passage still breaks the grass, pointing to a chamber that people forgot or refused to enter. A children’s burial ground lies nearby, suggesting the site held life and loss long before it disappeared from ordinary sight.
In undulating pasture, on a rise, overlooking the valley of the River Roughty. This rath is not visible at ground level though an associated Man-made underground passage (KE085-014001-) is visible. The rath is indicated on the 1895 OS 6-inch map as a sub-oval area (c. 30m N-S; c. 25m E-W). There is a children's burial ground (KE085-014002-) c. 70m to the SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
