Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a worn circular fort in County Longford, large enough for a small household yet so eroded that its entrance has vanished. Mature trees now stand inside the shallow rim, turning an old boundary into a living room for roots and shade. The fort may have been a rath before becoming a tree-ring, but the earth no longer answers that question. It keeps its shape only long enough to remind a passing person that ownership and memory both fade.
On a low rise in pasture. Depicted as a circular enclosure with the designation 'Fort' on the 1883 revised ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Not indicated on the 1837 ed. A raised circular area (diam. c. 21m) defined by a much-eroded, low scarp (H 0.5-1.4m). There is no trace of a fosse and the original entrance is not recognisable. Mature deciduous trees are growing on it. Possibly a rath that was reused as a tree-ring in relatively modern times. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
