Standing stone in Coumduff

Standing stone

What is recorded here

This stone stands against the S side of an E-W field boundary, on a very gentle S facing slope at the foot of the central mountain ridge. It measures 1.83m in height and 1.36m x .4m at base; E-W. The W side rises almost vertically, but the E side exhibits a pronounced shoulder, only .2m above the ground, before tapering evenly towards the top. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 94. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 3 August 2013
Probably dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, this standing stone may have functioned as a territorial marker or had ceremonial significance. No specific folklore or inscriptions are recorded, but its placement on a slope facing south suggests possible alignment with seasonal or ritual practices.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
