Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cornacranaghy

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Clear water flows through Cornacranaghy because the fort stands at the top of the hill. The fairies refused to leave until the people stopped striking the rock and asked permission to take what the place offered. They agreed, built a small chamber, and drank water that tasted like rain on clean stone. The chamber is gone, but the hole still gives water and the field remains quiet.
Situated towards the top of the NE-facing slope of a drumlin. This is a grass and reed-covered circular area (int. diam. 24.5m E-W; 23.8m N-S) that slopes down slightly to the NE and which is defined by a round-topped, overgrown, earthen bank (at W: Wth 2.9m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 1.2m) separated by a flat-bottomed fosse (at W: Wth of base 3.3m) from an outer bank (at W: Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.85m; ext. H 0.2m). The original entrance is not identified. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
