Kilcoe Castle is a 15th-century coastal tower house built in 1458 by the MacCarthys on a small island in Roaringwater Bay, West Cork. Its steep stairs hide spear slits for defenders, and two prison rooms sit above the sea instead of below it. During a 1603 siege, English forces took the last remaining castle in Munster, and legend claims they threw the defenders off the top.
