Conna Castle rose in 1554 under Thomas Ruadh Fitzgerald, becoming a staging post for Desmond rebellions and a battlefield where Cromwell’s men clashed with Royalists in 1650. Three girls died in a castle fire in 1653, while nearby Conna later bled through United Irishmen hangings, torture and banishment. The castle passed to the state in 1915, but the land still carries the heat of those losses.
