John Tuigg was born in Donoughmore, County Cork, on February 19, 1820, before crossing the Atlantic to become the third bishop of Pittsburgh. He answered Bishop Michael O'Connor's call for missionaries in 1849, served as his secretary, and later guided the diocese through boundary disputes until his death in 1889.
