What is recorded here
Embanked enclosure is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Coolteige, County Roscommon, Ireland. It occupies a circular grass-covered area towards the bottom of a gentle east-facing slope. An earthen bank and rounded fosse define the perimeter, while a causeway marks the original entrance at the east-southeast. Two other possible raths lie within two hundred metres to the north and east.
Towards the bottom of a gentle E-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 40.5m N-S; 37.4m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (at E: Wth 5.4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.1m) NNE-ESE and SSW-WSW, which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.5m S-W to 1.5m at N) elsewhere. It is surrounded by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 7.3-8m; Wth of base 2.7-3.3m; D 0.2-0.5m) WNW-E-WSW, but its outer edge is clipped by a NW-SE field bank at NE. There is a break in the bank (Wth 3.2m) at NE, but the original entrance is at ESE where there is a causeway (Wth 3.2m). The possible rath (RO036-020----) is c. 50m to the N and rath (RO036-022----) is c. 180m to the E.
