What is recorded here
Cloghprior Castle vanished from flat Tipperary pasture before the first survey maps drew its ghost, leaving only a house built metres from the forgotten site. The Civil Survey caught the ruin in 1654 with walls still standing, but those walls surrendered to grass and memory. Local tradition still points beside the house for the missing castle, preserving a shape the land refused to keep visible.
Situated on flat pasture with extensive views in all directions. Marked as 'Cloghprior Castle' on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map. No visible evidence of any castle mentioned in the Civil Survey 1654-56 as a 'ruined castle the walls onely standing', (Simington 1934, Vol. 2, 341) in the area. The present Cloghprior House was built a few metres to the SE of the building marked as 'Cloghprior Castle' on the 1st. ed. OS 6-inch map. According to owner of Cloghprior House there is a local tradition of a castle next to the house (SMR file 1991).
