Annotated 'Church Well' on the 1838 ed. OSi 6-inch map where it is shown standing in NW corner of an 'Old Burying Ground' (DU014-012002-) in the NE corner of a large field annotated 'Church Field' (DU014-012001-). In 1958 the well was being used for domestic purposes and not considered to be a holy well (Ó Danachair 1958, 76). It has been removed by quarrying. Linked to Saint Shane (Cill-Sháin), the well is traditionally associated with healing and pilgrimage, with the surrounding "Old Burying Ground" suggesting a long-standing ecclesiastical and sacred site. The name "Kilshane" derives from the Irish Cill-Sháin, meaning "church of Shane," indicating a Christian foundation possibly dating to the early medieval period.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
