Church (in Ruins)

To N of centre in graveyard (9530); fragmentary remains of Matehy parish church. E gable entirely removed; W gable (Wth 7.6m) shows signs of repairs and present angle of gable may not be original; ivy-clad N and S walls (L 15.3m) probably survive close to original length and height. Doorway near W end of S wall, lower half of which is now buried; chamfered door surround with pointed arch. Central portion of inner face of S wall heavily rebuilt. Inscribed headstone in NW corner dated 1779; at foot of W wall, embedded in ground, roughly-shaped stone Latin cross (H 0.57m; Wth 0.43m) (see photograph, Sheehan 1975, July 31). Church in partial repair in 1615 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 236) but in ruins by 1774 (ibid., 239). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
