Children's burial ground in Templeathea East

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Templeathea East still hides a children's burial ground near the River Gale, though no marker remains to show where the small bodies rest. The land may have swallowed the Killeen under grass, water or forgetting, yet the survey men wrote it down before it vanished completely. Children died young everywhere, but this place kept them separate, as if adulthood itself must not trample their markers. The river still flows past the absence, carrying what the soil refused to release.
The precise location of a children's burial ground known locally as a Killeen and located close to the River Gale in the townland of Templeathea East has not been identified. In 1838 the Ordnance Survey Name Books recorded that 'in the townland of Templeathea E., near the River Gale. A burial place for children' (OSNB Rathronan Parish, 1482).
