Saint Mary's Hospital

Boundary wall and drainage ditch, built c.1765. Irregular plan random coursed and squared limestone rubble walls to inner perimeter, over rubble stone core and generally topped with render and inset with regular arrangement of pebbles; sloped grass banks to outer perimeter of ditch. Some sections of cast-iron railings retained. South and southeastern boundary formed by roughcast perimeter walls of farm buildings, gateway and former non-commissioned officers' quarters.

Although a public park, Phoenix Park has always contained a number of self contained demesnes for senior members of the British administration in Ireland and related institutions - in this case the Royal Hibernian Military School established in 1766 for the education of the children of deceased soldiers and those on foreign duty. The survival of the enclosure is an important reminder and legacy of the history of the park. It is complemented by the variety of historic structures contained within, including the main hospital building, the associated church and the former headmaster's house.
