What is recorded here
Hilltop enclosure in Cavan (cope) is a D-shaped embanked fort on a Monaghan drumlin, mapped in 1834 and preserved behind field hedges. Its broad earthen bank and outer drain still mark a place where people likely watched the land, kept stock, or performed rituals before the entrance vanished. The unchanged shape suggests continuity rather than abandonment, as if the hill itself remembers the hands that built it.
Located on top of a drumlin. It is depicted as a large embanked enclosure described in gothic lettering as a 'fort' on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map. This is a D-shaped grass-covered area (diam. 78n E-W; 68m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 4.5m; Wth of top 2m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.9m) and hedge, with an outer drain (Wth of top 1.8m; Wth of base 0.9m; ext. D 1.1m) S-SW. The perimeter is incorporated into a field bank and hedge SW-N-E, but the monument has straight NNW-SSE and ENE-WSW field banks at E and S. An original entrance is not identified.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
